You’re not doing enough and it shows [6:00]
There is so much noise right now about how it’s harder than ever to land a job. We call bullshit. You’re not even trying, and it shows.
Justin recently started the hiring process and is noticing how identical the kind of people that are applying are. They all have the same qualifications and a pretty cover letter. No one stands out. No one is proving that they really want the job.
From an employers perspective, they’re looking for an applicant with passion. Not someone willing to take any job they can get. There is a huge lack of awareness out there.
Gary Vee’s videographer David Rock got noticed by Gary by being persistent. He offered to film a video for free just to get his foot in the door. From there, he was hired.
If you want something, you need to take action.
“Whenever I have an idea, my thought process goes something like this — Is this practical? how quickly can I get it done? and does it stay on course for my goals? I don’t care if I fail as long as I keep chipping away at all of the ideas in my head, rather than wishing I did them. I’m a dreamer at heart and will always be but that’s because I have big ambitions. To clarify the things I’ve currently accomplished didn’t come from wishing, just minimal process and massive amounts of action.” - David Rock
Marco is just starting his videography career but isn’t discouraged by the saturated industry. He believes if he’s consistent, persistent and puts in the hard work, it’ll pay off.
“You can't control if you’re the best, but you can be the hardest worker” - Marco [47:00]
If something isn’t working for you, question it. Start over. Create a new game plan.
Here are some tips from the Simple Minds gang:
- Know what you’re giving up
- Don’t try and be someone else - let your work show
- Surround yourself with content - who are you inspired by?
- Unpack what success means to you
- If you want something bad enough, be relentless
- A degree isn’t enough, you need more experience - doesn’t matter what it is, start a blog or whatever - just do SOMETHING
- Don’t rely on others to get your experience - you can create it yourself
If you love what you do stop getting distracted by all the noise. Keep doing what you’re doing until you do it better. If you’ve been knocked back, use it as an opportunity to be better.
You got this.
